Does This Count as Trauma? Stop Minimizing Abuse & Find Therapy in San Francisco and Beyond

As a trauma therapist, I have so many clients that feel that their experiences aren't severe enough to "count" as trauma. Survivors have a tendency to minimize abuse, neglect, and even sexual assault. The bottom line as a therapist: If it is trauma to YOU, then it "counts."

Understanding Trauma

Trauma is a deeply personal experience that can affect individuals in profound ways. It often involves exposure to a terrifying event or situation that can lead to intense emotional and psychological distress. While some experiences are clearly traumatic, others may be more subtle or difficult to identify.

Signs and Symptoms of Trauma

Here are some common signs and symptoms of trauma:

  • Intrusive thoughts: Flashbacks, nightmares, or unwanted memories of the traumatic event.

  • Avoidance: Trying to avoid thoughts, feelings, or situations related to the trauma.

  • Negative changes in mood: Feelings of hopelessness, anger, or guilt.

  • Hyperarousal: Being easily startled, having trouble concentrating, or experiencing physical symptoms like headaches or stomach problems.

Types of Trauma

Trauma can come in many forms, including:

  • Direct exposure: Experiencing a traumatic event firsthand.

  • Indirect exposure: Witnessing a traumatic event happen to someone else.

  • Learning about a traumatic event: Hearing about a traumatic event happening to a loved one.

  • Repeated exposure: Being repeatedly exposed to traumatic events, such as first responders or healthcare workers.

Seeking Professional Help

If you're experiencing symptoms of trauma, it's important to seek professional help. A therapist can provide support, guidance, and effective treatment options.
